 Creator:  Mathew, Thomas, d. 1705 or 6
Publication:  Printed by P. Force, Washington,1835.
Notes:  Prefatory note signed: "T. M.," 13 July 1705. The author was undoubtedly Thomas Mathew of Cherry Point, Northumberland, and there is apparently no ground for the conjecture of the historians Campbell and Fiske that it was Thomas, son of Gov. Samuel Matthews. cf. Va. mag. of hist. and biog., Oct. 1893. The original ms. was purchased from a London bookseller in 1803 by Rufus King, minister to Great Britain. He sent it to Thomas Jefferson who returned it after making a copy (cf. 9Title:  A Narrative of the Indian and civil wars in Virginia: in the years 1675 and 1676
 Publication:  P. Force, Washington,1835]
Notes:  Moses Coit Tyler, in his History of American literature, expresses the opinion that the author was one Cotton of Aquia Creek, husband of that Mrs. Anne Cotton who wrote "An account of our late troubles." Unfortunately the printed edition followed by Force was found to contain so many errors and omissions that it was carfully compared with manuscript and republished in Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society, v. 9, 1867, p. 299-342, with the following note: The manuscript is evidently contemporaneous with the events described, or written not long after their occurrence ... Several leaves being destroyed at the beginning and end, there is no title, except the running-heading on each page, viz. "The Indians proseedings," "Ingram's proceedings," &c., as in the reprint. Upon the outside of the cover, in a later hand, is written "Bacon's proceedings, July 27, 1764." This latter reprint was also separately issued in 1867 with title: The history of Bacon's and Ingram's rebellion.

11Title:  The Widdow Ranter: or The history of Bacon in Virginia. A tragi-comedy, acted by Their Majesties servants
 Creator:  Behn, Aphra, 1640-1689
 Dryden, John, 1631-1700
Publication:  Printed for James Knapton at the Crown in St. Paul's Church-yard, London,1690.
Notes:  First edition. The serious and historical portion of this play is founded on a contemporary pamphlet, Strange news from Virginia being a full and true account of the life and death of Nathaniel Bacon, London, 1677. cf. Works of A. Behn, ed. by M. Summers, v.4. Dedication signed: G. J. The Prologue, by Dryden, is the one he wrote for Shadwell's "True widow". After his quarrel with Shadwell he gave it to Mrs. Behn for this play. cf. Camb. hist. Eng. lit., v. 8, p. 457. According to Sabin (Bibl. amer., v. 2, no. 4372) the work "throws much light" on Bacon's rebellion, "exhibiting strongly the mismanagement of the colony, the incompetence of the authorities, etc., and the state of affairs which led to the outbreak".
